Compare a New Quilt With Your Last Tested Setup

By StitchRecall · · 2 min read

Two quilts can use the same thread while differing in other parts of the material combination. A saved setup is a starting record, not a guarantee that the next quilt will behave identically.

Compare on the same machine

Find a reviewed test from the same machine. Put its top thread, bobbin thread, needle, batting and backing beside the new combination. Explicitly mark values that are unknown. An incomplete record should not appear to be an exact match.

Suppose test S12 used one cotton blend batting and the next quilt uses polyester. Keep that difference visible even if both thread entries match. This comparison does not tell you what adjustment to make. It tells you which context from the earlier result no longer applies.

Test and preserve the result

Follow your machine instructions to test the actual combination. Record the outcome as a new test rather than replacing S12. Keep the physical swatch label and photos together so you can review evidence later.

A September 2026 quilter's account describes a spreadsheet of tests across batting brands. It is one person's report, not a controlled result or a transferable set of settings. The useful idea is preserving the observations.

Measure the value of a log

Time how long it takes to find a previous test and identify the changed materials. If a notebook is already quick enough, another app may add work. The planned StitchRecall interest page tests whether that retrieval and comparison are worth $19 one-time. It does not recommend tension values or control a machine.
